Don Mattingly, often affectionately nicknamed “Donnie Baseball,” is a legendary figure in the world of Major League Baseball, known for both his stellar playing career with the New York Yankees and his later work as a manager and coach.
Mattingly spent his entire 14-year playing career (1982–1995) as a first baseman for the New York Yankees. He was known for his exceptional hitting ability and his outstanding defense.
Don Mattingly was the 1985 American League MVP. He was selected to the All-Star team six consecutive times from 1984 to 1989. A nine-time Gold Glove Award winner, Mattingly was an elite defensive first baseman, setting an American League record for the position. Three-time Silver Slugger Award winner and he was named the Yankees’ captain from 1991 until his retirement in 1995.
His uniform number, 23, was retired by the Yankees in 1997, a rare honor for a player who didn’t win a championship with the team.
After retiring as a player, Mattingly transitioned to coaching and managing. He served as the Yankees’ hitting coach under manager Joe Torre (2004–2007). He followed Joe Torre to the Dodgers, first as a coach and then taking over as the team’s manager from 2011 to 2015. He led the Dodgers to three consecutive National League West titles (2013-2015).
Mattingly managed the Marlins for seven seasons. In 2020, he was named the National League Manager of the Year after leading the team to a playoff berth during the pandemic-shortened season. He then transitioned to the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.
