Did You Know?  What made Van Slyke a legendary figure across the baseball landscape wasn’t just his production—it was his legendary, unfiltered wit. In an era when sports interviews were becoming increasingly rehearsed, Van Slyke treated reporters and teammates to a masterclass in comedic timing.

Among his famous antics: during a tense, nationally televised game, he walked up to a base umpire and casually asked him if he knew where a good place to get pizza after the game was. When he found himself in a prolonged hitting slump, he famously told the media that he was hitting the ball so weakly he was considering hitting with a rolled-up newspaper instead. His ability to balance elite, intense athleticism with a refreshing sense of perspective made him an enduring fan favorite long after the Pirates’ dynasty concluded.
