Darryl Strawberry was a prominent right fielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) known for his powerful home runs and distinctive left-handed swing. His career spanned 17 seasons from 1983 to 1999, playing for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and New York Yankees.
Strawberry finished his career with 335 home runs and 1,000 runs batted in (RBI) with a .259 batting average.
He burst onto the scene in 1983 with the New York Mets, earning the National League Rookie of the Year award after hitting 26 home runs, 7 triples, and 74 RBIs with a .257 average. Strawberry was an 8-time MLB All-Star, making consecutive appearances from 1984 to 1991. He was a starting right fielder in five of those All-Star games. He was a key member of three World Series champion teams: the 1986 New York Mets and the 1996 and 1999 New York Yankees. He won two Silver Slugger Awards (1988, 1990) and led the National League in home runs in 1988 with 39.
Strawberry spent the majority of his prime with the New York Mets (1983-1990) and later contributed to the New York Yankees’ success, becoming one of the few players to play for both New York-based MLB teams. The Mets retired his No. 18 jersey in 2024 and he was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 2010.
After his playing career, Strawberry has been involved in efforts to help others with addiction. He has been open about his personal struggles with substance abuse, which led to suspensions during his playing career and legal troubles after retirement. He has since become involved in recovery and has opened drug and alcohol treatment centers.
