Dwight “Doc” Gooden was a professional baseball pitcher who played for 16 seasons in Major League Baseball. He is well known for his time with the New York Mets and New York Yankees.
Gooden made his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 1984 at the age of 19, quickly establishing himself as one of the most talented pitchers in the league. Nicknamed “Dr. K” for his impressive strikeout abilities. As a rookie, he earned an All-Star selection, won the National League Rookie of the Year award, and led the league in strikeouts.
Gooden had a historic 1985 season, winning the National League Cy Young Award and the pitching Triple Crown. He led Major League Baseball with 24 wins, a 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts. This ERA was the second-lowest in the live-ball era. He helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series championship.
While with the Yankees in 1996, he pitched a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners, the first no-hitter by a Yankees right-hander since Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series. He also won two more World Series championships with the Yankees in 1996 and 2000.
Over his career, Gooden was a four-time All-Star, won the Silver Slugger Award in 1992, and was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame. His jersey number, 16, was retired by the Mets.
