Juan Samuel played 16 seasons in the Major Leagues (1983–1998), most notably with the Philadelphia Phillies, but also with the Mets, Dodgers, Royals, Reds, Tigers, and Blue Jays.

Samuel had one of the greatest rookie seasons in history. He set a then-MLB, 1984 rookie record with 72 stolen bases and led the league with 19 triples. He finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting to Dwight Gooden.

He was a three-time All-Star (1984, 1987, 1991) and won a Silver Slugger in 1987. That year, he hit 28 home runs and stole 35 bases, becoming the first player in MLB history to reach double digits in doubles, triples, home runs, and stolen bases in each of his first four seasons.

After retiring, he became a successful coach and served as the interim manager for the Baltimore Orioles in 2010.
