Cole Hamels is a former left-handed starting pitcher who became a Philadelphia legend for his postseason heroics. Known as “Hollywood” for his California roots and photogenic presence, Hamels was the cornerstone of the Phillies’ pitching staff during their most successful era in the late 2000s.
Hamels spent 15 seasons in the major leagues. He was a first-round draft pick for Philadelphia in 2002 and debuted in 2006, quickly establishing himself as a top-tier ace with a devastating changeup.
Hamels’ 2008 season is etched in baseball history. He didn’t just win; he dominated. During the Phillies’ run to their second-ever championship, he went 4–0 with a 1.80 ERA across five starts. He became one of the few players to win both the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP in the same year.
Off the field, Cole and his wife Heidi (a former Survivor contestant) are famous for their massive charitable contributions through The Hamels Foundation. The foundation has provided over $4 million in grants to inner-city schools in the U.S. and helped build a school in Malawi, Africa. In 2017, in one of the most generous acts in sports history, the couple donated their unfinished $9.4 million Missouri mansion and 100 acres of land to Camp Barnabas, a charity that serves children with special needs and chronic illnesses.
