Brandon Puffer is an American former professional baseball pitcher whose career spanned 15 seasons, including four years in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was a right-handed relief pitcher known for his persistence. Puffer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 27th round of the 1994 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on April 17, 2002, with the Houston Astros.

Over his career, he played for three different MLB teams: Houston Astro, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.

One of the most unique aspects of Puffer’s career is his 2004 World Series ring. In July 2004, the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract from the Padres. He was promoted to the major league roster for a single night on September 2, 2004. Although he was in the bullpen, he never actually pitched for the team and was designated for assignment the following day. Despite this, team owner John W. Henry awarded championship rings to every player on the roster that year, making Puffer a World Series champion without ever throwing a pitch for Boston.

In September 2008, while playing for the Frisco RoughRiders (a Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers), Puffer was arrested following a playoff game. He was charged with burglary. He was later found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. Puffer has since been open about this period of his life, attributing the incident to a “blackout” caused by alcohol and a series of poor decisions. He served over three years of his sentence before being paroled in 2011.

Since his release, Puffer has focused on redemption and helping others. He authored a book titled “From the Bullpen to the State Pen,” which details his rise to the majors, his criminal conviction, and his journey toward faith and accountability.

Today, Puffer is active in the baseball community as a pitching instructor and coach at GPS Texas Baseball. He is also a motivational speaker who shares his story of restoration and the importance of personal responsibility. Lastly, he is an advocate for sobriety, often sharing his message through his platform, “Coach Puff Positive.”
