James Patrick “Jim” Edmonds is a former professional baseball center fielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 17 seasons from 1993 to 2010. Known for both his acrobatic defense and his powerful hitting, he played for six different teams.
Edmonds was drafted by the California Angels in 1988 and played for them from 1993 to 1999. His most prominent years were with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2000 to 2007, where he earned the affectionate nickname “Jimmy Baseball” or “Jimmy Ballgame.” He also had stints with the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Cincinnati Reds.
Edmonds was widely recognized for his defensive skills and spectacular catches, earning eight Gold Glove Awards in his career. He was a prolific hitter, finishing his career with 393 home runs, 1,199 RBIs, and a .284 batting average. He had eleven seasons with 20 or more home runs, five with 30 or more, and two with over 40. In 2004, he had a career-high 42 home runs and 111 RBIs, earning his only Silver Slugger Award. He was a four-time All-Star (1995, 2000, 2003, and 2005).
Edmonds was a key member of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2006 World Series championship team and he was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.
After his playing career, Edmonds became a broadcaster.
