While Mitchell had a solid career, his 1989 season with the San Francisco Giants was one of the most dominant individual years of the era. He didn’t just win the NL MVP; he terrorized the league.

On April 26, 1989, Mitchell made arguably the most famous defensive play in baseball history. He overran a fly ball off the bat of Ozzie Smith and, realizing he couldn’t get his glove around in time, simply reached back and snagged the ball with his bare hand while on a dead run.

Hall of Famer Gary Carter gave him the nickname “World” because he claimed Mitchell was so talented he could play every position in the world (and as a rookie for the ’86 Mets, he actually played six different positions).

1986 Mets: He was a key rookie on that legendary squad. In the famous 10th inning of World Series Game 6, Mitchell was the third consecutive single (after Gary Carter and Ray Knight) that kept the rally alive before the Buckner error.

The Reds Resurgence: In the early 90s, people thought he was washed up, but he went to Cincinnati and put up massive numbers. In the strike-shortened 1994 season, he was actually out-slugging everyone, hitting .326 with 30 HRs in just 95 games.

Mitchell was one of the first big-name stars to jump to Japan for a massive payday, signing with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in 1995. He hit a grand slam in his very first at-bat there, though his stay was short-lived due to injuries and cultural clashes.
