Howard Johnson, affectionately known by fans as “HoJo,” was one of the most dynamic and underrated offensive threats of the late 1980s and early 90s. While he spent time with the Tigers, Rockies, and Cubs, he is most iconic for his tenure with the New York Mets.
In an era where players were often categorized as either “sluggers” or “base stealers,” Johnson was both. He was a perennial member of the 30-30 Club (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a single season), achieving the feat three times (1987, 1989, and 1991).
At the time, only Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays had reached those numbers as often.
- 1984 World Series Champ: He won his first ring as a young player with the Detroit Tigers.
- 1986 World Series Champ: He was a key depth piece for the legendary ’86 Mets.
- 1991 Peak: This was his “monster” year. He led the National League in both Home Runs (38) and Runs Batted In (117), proving he could carry an offense.
- Two-Time All-Star: (1989, 1991).
HoJo was primarily a third baseman, but he was the ultimate “plug and play” athlete for the Mets. When the team needed to shuffle the lineup, he moved to shortstop or the outfield.
Howard Johnson remains high on the Mets’ all-time leaderboards for home runs, runs scored, and stolen bases. After retiring, he stayed close to the game as a successful hitting coach, helping a new generation find their swing.
