Anderson holds a unique place in the MLB record books at time of writing. He is one of only two players in history (alongside Barry Bonds) to achieve both a 50-home run season and a 50-stolen base season at different points in their career.
- 1992: The Speed Demon: He became the first player in American League history to join the “20/50” club, hitting 21 home runs and stealing 53 bases.
- 1996: The Power Surge: In a season that still sparks debate today, Anderson exploded for 50 home runs. To put that in perspective, he never hit more than 24 in any other season.
- The Leadoff Weapon: In 1996, he set a major league record by leading off four consecutive games with a home run.
While he started with the Boston Red Sox, Anderson became an icon in Baltimore, eventually being inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame.
Anderson was as much a fitness icon as he was a ballplayer. Known for his signature sideburns and a physique that looked more like a bodybuilder’s than a traditional leadoff man’s, he was a pioneer in the “strength and conditioning” movement of the 90s.
After retirement Anderson didn’t stay away from the game for long. He spent years in the Orioles’ front office as the Vice President of Baseball Operations, serving as a bridge between the executives and the players. As of 2026, he has taken on a new challenge as the Hitting Coach for the Los Angeles Angels, finally moving from the front office back to the “trenches” of the dugout.
