While he’s remembered as a solid middle infielder for several winning teams, he is legendary for a single phrase that defined the 1996 New York Yankees’ championship run.
The most famous part of Duncan’s legacy isn’t a stat, but a T-shirt. In 1996, Duncan coined the slogan “We Play Neat” (often misinterpreted as “We Play Hard,” but he clarified it was “Neat”). He had shirts made for the clubhouse, and it became the unofficial mantra for a team that would go on to kickstart a dynasty.
Duncan was a classic “utility plus” player—capable of playing second, short, third, and the outfield. He was a two-time World Series Champion (1990 Reds, 1996 Yankees) and an All-Star in 1994.
- Los Angeles Dodgers: Where he started his career as a highly-touted shortstop, showing flashes of brilliance and speed.
- Cincinnati Reds: A vital cog in the 1990 championship machine, hitting .306 that season.
- Philadelphia Phillies: Played a huge role in their 1993 World Series run, batting .282 with 11 home runs.
- New York Yankees: Though he was only there for a short time, his 1996 season is considered one of the best “one-off” veteran performances in franchise history.
Duncan was the bridge between the old-school era of “scrappy” middle infielders and the modern era of veteran clubhouse leaders. He wasn’t a superstar, but he had a knack for showing up on teams that were destined for the Fall Classic.
