Alongside teammates Norm Charlton and Randy Myers, Dibble formed a relief trio that was as intimidating as it was effective. Long before the “triple-digit” fastball was common, Dibble was one of the few pitchers who routinely hit 100 mph.

In 1992, he set a then-MLB record by reaching 500 career strikeouts in only 368 innings (a record since surpassed by Aroldis Chapman).

Dibble was a cornerstone of the 1990 Reds team that swept the Oakland Athletics. He earned NLCS MVP honors that year (sharing the award with Randy Myers) after pitching five scoreless innings against the Pirates.

Dibble was as famous for his temper as he was for his fastball. His career was marked by high-profile emotional outbursts. Injuries eventually caught up with him. After a torn rotator cuff and a broken forearm, he struggled with control and velocity, ending his career in 1995 with brief stints for the White Sox and Brewers.

Dibble successfully transitioned into a long career in broadcasting, though he remained a polarizing figure. He spent years as an analyst for ESPN and Fox Sports, and served as the color commentator for the Washington Nationals until 2010.
