Rogers owns one of the most prestigious achievements in sports: a Perfect Game. Pitching for the Texas Rangers against the California Angels, he retired all 27 batters he faced. The perfect game was famously preserved in the 9th inning by rookie center fielder Rusty Greer, who made a spectacular diving catch on a slicing liner that seemed destined for a hit.

If his perfect game was the peak of his early career, his 2006 postseason with the Detroit Tigers was his late-career masterpiece. At age 41, Rogers pitched 23 consecutive scoreless innings during the playoffs. He was the heart of a veteran rotation that led the Tigers to a surprise World Series appearance.

During Game 2 of the 2006 World Series, cameras caught a dark smudge on the palm of Rogers’ pitching hand. While he claimed it was just dirt and rosin, it became a massive controversy that followed his legacy for years.

Rogers wasn’t just a thrower; he was a craftsman. Two things set him apart:

The Pickoff: He is widely considered one of the greatest “pickoff” artists in history. He finished his career with 93 pickoffs, the second-most all-time since the stat began being tracked.

Gold Glove Defense: He won five Gold Glove Awards. He was essentially a fifth infielder on the mound, famously described by Billy Beane as “the best fielding pitcher I ever saw.”

Rogers had a famously prickly relationship with the media. In 2005, he was suspended for a high-profile physical altercation with two cameramen on the field in Texas, an incident that led to an assault charge (later reduced) and significantly strained his relationship with the Rangers organization.

Rogers has largely stepped away from the public eye, though he is a member of the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.
