Thurman Clyde “Rusty” Greer is a former American professional baseball outfielder who spent his entire nine-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the Texas Rangers.
Greer was a consistent hitter who finished his career with a .305 batting average. He was a cornerstone of the Rangers’ offense during their successful run in the late 1990s
Greer was a fan favorite in Texas for his hard-nosed, gritty style of play. He was known for making diving catches and crashing into the outfield walls, a style that ultimately took a toll on his body and contributed to injuries that shortened his career.
In recognition of his contributions to the franchise, he was inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2007.
Despite signing a significant contract extension in 2002, chronic and recurring injuries, particularly to his back, limited his playing time and ultimately forced his early retirement.
After his playing career, Greer has remained involved in baseball, coaching at the high school level.
