Billy Wagner is a former professional baseball pitcher who had a 16-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB) primarily as a closer. A left-handed pitcher, he was known for his blazing fastball and dominant performance out of the bullpen.
Wagner played for the Houston Astros (1995-2003), Philadelphia Phillies (2004-2005), New York Mets (2006-2009), Boston Red Sox (2009), and Atlanta Braves (2010). Known for his high strikeout rate, Wagner finished with 1,196 strikeouts in 903 innings pitched.
He was a seven-time All-Star (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2010). Wagner also won the National League Rolaids Relief Man Award in 1999.
In his tenth and final year on the ballot, Wagner was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025. He is the first NCAA Division III player to be named to the Hall of Fame.
