Ryan Hancock is a former professional baseball pitcher whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) was very brief. He is best known as a top draft pick who had a very short stint in the big leagues.
Hancock was a standout athlete at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he was a two-sport athlete, playing both baseball and football. After suffering a knee injury that ended his football career, he focused solely on baseball. He was drafted by the California Angels in the second round of the 1993 MLB Draft.
After a few years in the minor leagues, Hancock made his major league debut with the California Angels in 1996. His career in the big leagues lasted just over a month. He pitched in 11 games, starting four of them, and had a record of 4-1.
Hancock’s career is a classic example of a top prospect who was unable to translate his minor league success to the major league level. His short career in the majors is often referenced in the context of baseball card collecting, as his rookie cards from the mid-1990s were once highly sought after by collectors who believed he would become a star.
