Before he ever stepped onto a professional field, Ventura was arguably the greatest college player ever. Playing for Oklahoma State, he set an NCAA Division I record with a 58-game hitting streak in 1987. He was a three-time All-American and won the Golden Spikes Award (the “Heisman of baseball”) in 1988.
Ventura spent 16 seasons in the big leagues (primarily with the White Sox and Mets) and was a model of consistency. He was an elite defender, winning 6 Gold Glove Awards at third base. Ventura had an uncanny knack for hitting with the bases loaded. He hit 18 career grand slams, which is tied for 5th all-time.
In Game 5 of the 1999 NLCS, Ventura hit a walk-off grand slam for the Mets to beat the Braves. However, his teammates mobbed him before he could reach second base. Because he never finished rounding the bags, the hit was officially ruled a single, and the final score was 4-3 instead of 7-3. It remains one of the most famous “paperwork errors” in sports history.
Ventura returned to the Chicago White Sox as their manager from 2012 to 2016. While his managerial record was a modest 375–435, he remained a beloved figure in Chicago for his “cerebral” approach and dry wit.
