A first-round draft pick, Hurst was a tall left-hander known for a devastating “foshball” (a hybrid split-finger/changeup) and a looping curve. While he shared the rotation with Roger Clemens, Hurst was often the team’s most reliable big-game pitcher.
He mastered the difficult task of pitching as a lefty in Fenway Park, racking up 56 wins there (the second-most by a southpaw in franchise history). In the 1986 World Series against the Mets, Hurst was so dominant that he was voted World Series MVP while Game 6 was still in progress.
In 1989, Hurst signed a massive free-agent deal with the San Diego Padres. Many expected him to struggle moving away from the AL, but he actually improved. In his first year in San Diego (1989), he posted a career-low 2.69 ERA and won 15 games. For a decade (1983–1992), Hurst was the only pitcher in the Major Leagues to record at least 10 wins every single season.
Hurst finished his 15-year career with the Colorado Rockies and Texas Rangers before retiring in 1994 due to shoulder injuries.
