Babcock’s path to the Major Leagues was incredibly arduous. He spent 12 years in the minor leagues before he finally got his call-up. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 1967.
He bounced around the systems of the Pirates, Expos, and Orioles, often performing well in the high minors (AAA) but never getting the nod until he joined the Texas Rangers. He finally made his MLB debut on July 22, 1979, at the age of 29—a point when many players are already considering retirement.
Once he arrived, Babcock carved out a respectable role as a right-handed relief pitcher for the Rangers. He was a tall, imposing figure on the mound at 6’5″. His best season (1981) was unfortunately cut short by the MLB player’s strike, which sapped some of his momentum.
After his final MLB appearance in June 1981, Babcock returned to the high minors. He continued to be a reliable arm in the PCL (Pacific Coast League) for the Rangers and later the Seattle Mariners organization before hanging up his cleats in 1984.
Bob Babcock shares this 1981 Topps “Future Stars” card with John Butcher and Jerry Don Gleaton.
