Alejandro Peña’s 15-season career is a tale of two pitchers: the NL ERA leader who looked like a future ace, and the cold-blooded reliever who became a high-leverage staple for some of the greatest teams of the era.
Signed out of the Dominican Republic as a converted third baseman, Peña rose through the Dodgers system with a heavy fastball and a devastating slider. His breakout came in 1984 when he posted a league-leading 2.48 ERA and threw 4 shutouts. At that moment, he was one of the most feared starters in the National League.
Severe shoulder issues in 1985 derailed his trajectory as a starter. After surgery, he reinvented himself as a hard-throwing reliever, a move that likely saved his career and allowed him to pitch into the mid-90s.
While names like Orel Hershiser dominated the headlines, Peña was the backbone of the Dodgers’ bullpen during their 1988 World Series run.
He was arguably the most reliable arm in the pen during the 1988 NLCS and World Series. He earned the win in the legendary Game 1 of the ’88 World Series, pitching scoreless 8th and 9th innings to set the stage for Kirk Gibson’s walk-off.
By 1989, he was the Dodgers’ primary closer, recording 27 saves and maintaining an elite strikeout rate.
Career Highlights:
- 3x World Series Champion: 1981, 1988 (Dodgers), and 1995 (Braves).
- Workhorse Stats: Finished with a career 3.11 ERA, 74 saves, and over 800 strikeouts.
- Versatility: He is one of the few players in modern history to lead the league in ERA as a starter and later serve as a primary closer for multiple pennant-winning teams.
