Jack Fimple played a brief but essential role for the Los Angeles Dodgers during their 1983 National League West title run. While he didn’t have the long-term career of a starter, his arrival was a classic “next man up” story that helped save the Dodgers’ season.
Fimple’s most significant contribution came when the Dodgers were in a major bind. In 1983, both of the team’s primary catchers, Mike Scioscia and Steve Yeager, went down with injuries. Manager Tommy Lasorda was forced to turn to Fimple, who had been playing in Triple-A Albuquerque. He stepped in and exceeded expectations, appearing in 54 games and hitting .250 with 22 RBIs. His steady play behind the plate and a string of clutch hits kept the Dodgers in first place while their veterans recovered.
Jack Fimple played for a couple teams including Los Angeles Dodgers (1983–1984, 1986) and California Angels (1987). He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians but was traded to the Dodgers in 1981 as part of the deal that sent Rick Sutcliffe to Cleveland. Though primarily a catcher, Fimple was surprisingly athletic; in the minors and occasionally in the majors, he saw time at third base and second base.
After 1983, Fimple’s playing time dropped significantly as Scioscia and Yeager returned to full health. Interestingly, he was almost a footnote in one of the biggest “what-if” trades in baseball history: at one point, he was reportedly included in a proposed package to the Phillies for Mike Schmidt, though the trade never materialized.
He finished his career with the Angels in 1987, retiring with a career batting average of .228.
