Mike Schmidt is universally regarded as one of the greatest third basemen in baseball history, a true superstar who combined prodigious power with stellar defense throughout his 18-year career (1972-1989), all spent with the Philadelphia Phillies.

His first full season in 1973 was a bit of a struggle. While he hit 18 home runs, he also batted a paltry .196 with 136 strikeouts in 132 games. This early performance hinted at his power but also highlighted the adjustments he needed to make at the big league level. The 1974 season was Schmidt’s true breakout. His batting average jumped to .282, and he led the National League with 36 home runs and finished second in RBIs with 116. He also made his first of 12 All-Star appearances and finished sixth in NL MVP voting.

He led the NL in home runs for three consecutive seasons (1974-1976), including 38 in both 1975 and 1976. He also began to establish himself as an elite defender at third base, winning his first of ten Gold Glove Awards in 1976. Schmidt led the Phillies to their first-ever World Series championship in 1980, winning both the National League MVP and the World Series MVP awards that year. Mike Schmidt’s career in the early 70s was foundational, laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most decorated and dominant careers in baseball history.

He was overwhelmingly elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995 on his first ballot, receiving 96.52% of the votes.

The most sought-after and iconic rookie card of Mike Schmidt is this 1973 Topps #615. This card is a multi-player “Rookie Third Basemen” card, featuring Schmidt alongside fellow future notable player Ron Cey and John Hilton. It is a high-number card in the 1973 Topps set, adding to its desirability.
