Leondaus “Lee” Lacy was a versatile and reliable outfielder and infielder who enjoyed a 16-season career in Major League Baseball (1972-1987). While perhaps not a household name like some of his more famous teammates, Lacy was a valuable contributor known for his consistent hitting, surprising power, and clutch moments, particularly as a pinch-hitter.
During his initial tenure with the Dodgers, Lacy was primarily used as a versatile utility player. He played second base (where he started in the minors), and all three outfield positions. His ability to play multiple positions made him an invaluable asset for manager Tommy Lasorda. Lacy was a part of several successful Dodgers teams that reached the World Series, playing in the Fall Classic in 1974, 1977, and 1978.
Lacy was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates before the 1979 season and became an important role player on the team that defeated the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. This was his fourth World Series appearance and his only championship. On June 8, 1986, as a member of the Orioles, he had a career day at Yankee Stadium, hitting three home runs and driving in six RBIs in an 18-9 victory over the New York Yankees.
After his playing career, Lee Lacy has largely remained out of the public spotlight, though he has participated in youth baseball camps and community events, particularly those focused on inner-city youth baseball.
