David Earl “Davey” Lopes is a significant figure in baseball history, recognized as one of the game’s premier second basemen of the 1970s and 80s, particularly for his rare blend of power and speed. He had an impressive 16-season Major League Baseball career (1972-1987).
Lopes was the second baseman in the iconic Dodgers infield that remained together for over eight seasons, alongside Steve Garvey (1B), Bill Russell (SS), and Ron Cey (3B). This quartet provided stability and consistent production for one of the National League’s most successful teams of the era. What made Lopes unique was his combination of speed and surprising power for a second baseman. He led the National League in stolen bases twice (1975 and 1976), with a career-high of 77 steals in 1975. He was also a four-time All-Star (1978-1981), consistently recognized for his contributions. In addition Lopes earned a Gold Glove Award in 1978 for his stellar defense at second base.
Dave Lopes was a vital part of the Dodgers team that won the 1981 World Series against the New York Yankees. He played in four World Series with the Dodgers (1974, 1977, 1978, 1981).
After retiring as a player, Dave Lopes transitioned into a highly successful and extensive coaching career that spanned over 30 years. He served as a coach for numerous MLB teams, including the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres (multiple stints), Washington Nationals (multiple stints), Philadelphia Phillies, and a return to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a key member of the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies World Series championship coaching staff. He also had a stint as a manager for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2000-2002.
Dave Lopes’s most recognized rookie card is this 1973 Topps #609. It is a multi-player card featuring Lopes as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers with Larvell Blanks and Pedro Garcia.
