Steven Patrick Garvey, often referred to as “Mr. Clean” due to his wholesome image, was a prominent first baseman in Major League Baseball for 19 seasons (1969-1987). Known for his consistent hitting, durable play, and clutch performances.
Garvey was a cornerstone of the dominant Los Angeles Dodgers teams of the 1970s. He was a crucial part of one of baseball’s most iconic infields, alongside second baseman Davey Lopes, shortstop Bill Russell, and third baseman Ron Cey. This quartet played together for eight and a half years. In 1974, Garvey had a breakout season, batting .312 with 21 home runs and a league-leading 111 RBIs, earning him the National League Most Valuable Player Award. Garvey set the National League record for consecutive games played with 1,207 (from 1975 to 1983), earning him the nickname “Iron Man” from Sports Illustrated.
Garvey played a key role in the Dodgers’ success, which included four National League pennants (1974, 1977, 1978, 1981) and a World Series championship in 1981. He was a 10-time All-Star (1974-1981, 1984, 1985), and a two-time All-Star Game MVP (1974, 1978). Garvey was also an excellent defensive first baseman, winning four consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1974 to 1977.
In the 1984 National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs, Garvey delivered one of the most iconic moments in Padres history, hitting a dramatic walk-off home run in Game 4 to help the Padres win their first National League pennant. He was named the NLCS MVP for his performance.
After retiring from baseball in 1987, Steve Garvey pursued various ventures, including business and public speaking. He has also remained involved in charitable work. In 2024, he ran for a U.S. Senate seat in California.
The San Diego Padres retired his uniform No. 6 in 1988. He was also selected to the inaugural class of “Legends of Dodger Baseball” in 2019.
