Ted Lyle Simmons, nicknamed “Simba,” is a Hall of Fame catcher who was one of the most prolific offensive players at his position throughout his 21-year Major League Baseball career (1968-1988). He was known for his consistent hitting, power, and switch-hitting ability.

Simmons spent the majority and peak of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. From 1971 to 1980, Simmons was consistently one of the National League’s best hitters. He batted over .300 seven times in his career and hit 20 or more home runs six times. He was an eight-time All-Star (1972-1974, 1977-1979, 1981, 1983). Simmons was known for his ability to stay in the lineup, a remarkable feat for a catcher, and consistently put up strong numbers.

After the 1980 season, Simmons was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he continued to be a productive hitter. He helped the Brewers reach the 1982 World Series, where they faced his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals, in a thrilling seven-game series. Simmons hit two home runs in that Fall Classic. Simmons then finished his career with a few seasons as a utility player and pinch-hitter for the Atlanta Braves.

Ted Simmons’ path to the National Baseball Hall of Fame was a long one. Despite his impressive career statistics, he received only 3.7% of the vote in his first year of eligibility on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) ballot in 1994, falling off the ballot. However, his case was continually championed by those who recognized his consistent offensive production and longevity at a demanding position. In December 2019, he was finally elected to the Hall of Fame by the Modern Baseball Era Committee, receiving 81.3% of the necessary votes. The St. Louis Cardinals retired his uniform No. 23 in 2021, and he is also a member of the Milwaukee Brewers Wall of Honor.

After his playing career, Simmons remained involved in baseball, notably serving as a general manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early 1990s and later in various executive and scouting roles for other organizations.
