David Ismael Concepción, known to fans as “Davey” or “El Rey David” (King David), was a Venezuelan professional baseball shortstop whose career was almost entirely synonymous with the Cincinnati Reds’ “Big Red Machine” dynasty of the 1970s. He played all 19 seasons of his Major League Baseball career (1970-1988) with the Reds.

Concepcion was the steady and often spectacular shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds teams that dominated the National League in the 1970s. Alongside Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, and Tony Pérez, he formed the “Great Eight” core of a team that won four National League pennants (1970, 1972, 1975, 1976) and back-to-back World Series championships (1975, 1976). Concepcion won multiple Gold Glove Awards (1974-1977, 1979) for his defensive prowess, establishing himself as one of the best defensive shortstops of his era. He won two Silver Slugger Awards (1981, 1982). Concepcion was a nine-time National League All-Star (1973, 1975-1979, 1981-1983). He was also named the MVP of the 1982 All-Star Game, hitting a two-run home run in the game.

After retiring as a player in 1988, Dave Concepcion remained connected to baseball, often serving as a manager in the Venezuelan Winter League.

The Cincinnati Reds retired his uniform No. 13 in 2007, solidifying his place as a franchise legend.

Dave Concepcion’s most recognized rookie card is the 1971 Topps #14. This card features an individual photo of Concepcion in his Cincinnati Reds uniform. As with all cards from the 1971 Topps set, it is characterized by its distinctive black borders. These borders are notoriously prone to chipping and wear, making high-grade examples of Concepcion’s rookie card particularly challenging.
