Alvin Davis, universally known as “Mr. Mariner,” was the first true homegrown superstar for the Seattle Mariners. He anchored the franchise through the 1980s and was their primary offensive threat before the arrival of names like Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martínez.
Davis had arguably the greatest rookie season in Mariners history. Called up from Triple-A just three games into the 1984 season to replace an injured Ken Phelps, he made an immediate impact. He homered in each of his first two MLB games and set a major league record by reaching base in each of his first 47 career games. He was the easy choice for the 1984 AL Rookie of the Year award, finishing with a .284 average, 27 home runs, and 116 RBIs. He earned his first and only All-Star nod that same year.
