Edgar Martinez is a legend. Often referred to as “Gar” or “Papi,” he wasn’t just a great player; he’s widely considered the greatest Designated Hitter (DH) to ever play the game.
He spent his entire 18-year career (1987–2004) with the Mariners, becoming the heartbeat of the franchise during their most iconic era.
Before Edgar, the DH was often seen as a place for old sluggers who couldn’t field anymore. He turned it into a specialized craft. MLB actually renamed the “Outstanding Designated Hitter Award” to the Edgar Martinez Award in 2004. Even the greatest closer in history, Mariano Rivera couldn’t figure him out. Rivera famously said that Martinez was the toughest hitter he ever faced. Edgar hit .579 against him in 19 at-bats.
It took a while for voters to recognize a full-time DH, but Edgar finally got his call to Cooperstown in 2019 (his 10th and final year on the ballot). His induction was a massive victory for the “DH as a real position” argument and sparked celebrations across the Pacific Northwest and his home of Puerto Rico.
He’s still involved with the Mariners, currently serving as their Senior Director of Hitting Strategy. If you walk outside T-Mobile Park in Seattle, you can even take a stroll down Edgar Martinez Drive.
