Mike Madden was a left-handed pitcher who spent his entire four-year Major League career with the Houston Astros during the mid-1980s. While he wasn’t a household name, he was a versatile “swingman” who could both start and come out of the bullpen.
Madden arrived in Houston as part of a significant trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1982, which sent Hall of Famer Don Sutton to Milwaukee.
His first year in 1983 was easily his best. He pitched in 28 games (13 starts) and finished with a 9–5 record and a solid 3.14 ERA. He showed great promise as a young lefty in a rotation that featured legends like Nolan Ryan and Joe Niekro. Over the next three seasons, Madden’s role shifted frequently. He struggled to maintain his rookie consistency, eventually moving more toward middle relief.
He was part of the staff during the Astros’ famous 1986 division-winning season, though he made his final MLB appearance in June of that year, just before the team’s historic postseason battle with the Mets.
