A mainstay of the Cincinnati Reds rotation for over a decade, Browning was a quintessential “crafty lefty.” He didn’t overpower hitters with velocity; instead, he relied on pinpoint control and a devastating screwball.
Tom Browning had a historic rookie season going 20–9, becoming the first rookie to win 20 games in 31 years (since Bob Grim in 1954). He finished as the runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year.
The Perfect Game: After a two-hour rain delay, Browning retired all 27 Los Angeles Dodgers he faced in a 1–0 victory. As of writing it remains the only perfect game in Reds history and the first in the National League since Sandy Koufax in 1965. Browning was a key piece of the “Wire-to-Wire” Reds, winning Game 3 of the World Series against the powerhouse Oakland Athletics in 1990.
Browning was known for his sense of humor. In 1993, while the Reds were playing the Cubs at Wrigley Field, he famously slipped out of the clubhouse in full uniform and was spotted sitting on a nearby rooftop on Sheffield Avenue with fans. He was eventually fined $500 for the stunt, but it remains one of the most legendary pranks in MLB history.
Reds Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2006, he ranks near the top of nearly every franchise pitching category for left-handers.
Sadly, Tom Browning passed away on December 19, 2022, at the age of 62. He is remembered not just for his “perfect” night in 1988, but as a beloved figure in Cincinnati who stayed active in the community and the organization long after his playing days ended.
