Marzano was a key member of the storied 1984 U.S. Olympic Team. On a roster featuring future Hall of Famers like Mark McGwire and Barry Larkin, Marzano was the primary catcher. He actually hit the first-ever home run by a U.S. player in Olympic competition during a 2–1 win over Chinese Taipei.
Marzano’s most sought-after cards inclue this 1985 “Team USA” release. Because he was a first-round pick (14th overall in 1984), collectors jumped on these early.
Marzano played 10 seasons in the bigs, but he is perhaps most famous for a single moment of “Philadelphia toughness” in 1996. While catching for the Mariners, Marzano famously took exception to Paul O’Neill’s complaining about a pitch. Marzano stood up, shoved O’Neill, and a benches-clearing brawl ensued. It cemented his reputation as a guy who never backed down.
He was the primary backup to Rich Gedman during the late 80s, helping the Red Sox to AL East titles in 1988 and 1990.
After retiring, he became a star on MLB.com’s Daily News Live and a fixture on Phillies pre- and post-game shows until his tragic passing in 2008 at the age of 45.
