Rafael Santana was the steady, quiet anchor of the 1986 World Champion Mets’ infield. While he didn’t have the flash of Lenny Dykstra or the power of Darryl Strawberry, he was a reliable defensive specialist who notoriously hit eighth in a lineup so deep that he led the team in intentional walks in 1986—simply because pitchers would rather face the pitcher’s spot than him.
Santana played every inning of the 13 postseason games for the Mets in 1986. While his regular season average was just .218, he stepped up when it mattered most.
NLCS vs. Astros: He set a National League Championship Series record for shortstops with 13 putouts, 18 assists, and 31 total chances in a six-game series.
World Series vs. Red Sox: He hit a solid .250 (5-for-20) and collected two hits off Roger Clemens in Game 2.
Defensive Stability: He finished his Mets career with a .973 fielding percentage in both 1986 and 1987, ranking among the best in the NL at the time.
Santana was eventually traded to the Yankees in 1988, making him one of the few players of the era to start at shortstop for both New York teams.
