Shawn Abner is one of the most famous “what if” stories of the 1980s. As the #1 overall pick in the 1984 MLB Draft by the New York Mets, he was projected to be the next superstar outfielder. While he didn’t reach those Hall of Fame heights, he became a cult favorite for collectors and spent six seasons in the big leagues.
Coming out of Mechanicsburg High School, Abner was a true five-tool prospect. The Mets chose him over future stars like Mark McGwire and Greg Maddux, which has made his cards a fascinating “era-defining” study for hobbyists.
- Trade to the Padres: Before he could break into the legendary ’86 Mets lineup, he was the centerpiece of the trade that sent Kevin McReynolds to New York.
- Best Season: His 1991 campaign with the Padres was his most productive, where he hit .272 in 123 games and showed the defensive range that scouts originally raved about.
- Versatility: Known for his strong arm, he eventually saw time at all three outfield positions and even some first base.
Abner transitioned into a reliable bench bat and defensive replacement later in his career, spending time with the Padres, Angels, and White Sox.
