Shawon Dunston is a former professional baseball player who was a shortstop for 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is best known for his time with the Chicago Cubs and for his powerful throwing arm.
He made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 1985 and spent the majority of his career there. He was the team’s everyday shortstop and formed a notable double-play combination with second baseman Ryne Sandberg. He was elected to the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame in 2023.
While he began and ended his career with the Cubs and had several stints with the San Francisco Giants, Dunston also played for many other teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Mets. Dunston was a two-time All-Star, selected in 1988 and 1990. He was also known for having one of the strongest throwing arms in the league.
While he never won a World Series title, he did reach the World Series with the San Francisco Giants in 2002.
