Paul O’Neill, known as “The Warrior” for his intense and fiery demeanor on the field, was a standout right fielder for 17 seasons in Major League Baseball. He is most beloved for his time with the New York Yankees, where he became an integral part of their dynasty in the late 1990s.
O’Neill began his career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1985. He was a solid contributor and was part of the 1990 team that won the World Series, giving him his first championship ring. After being traded to the New York Yankees in 1993, O’Neill blossomed into a star. He was a cornerstone of the Yankees teams that won four World Series titles in five years (1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000).
O’Neill was famous for his emotional displays, often yelling at himself or smashing bats in frustration after a poor at-bat. This passion endeared him to Yankees fans, who affectionately gave him his nickname.
After retiring in 2001, O’Neill transitioned to a broadcasting role and became a popular color commentator for the YES Network, where he has won multiple Emmy Awards. His number 21 was retired by the New York Yankees in 2022, and he was honored with a plaque in Monument Park in 2014, solidifying his status as a Yankees legend.
