If you’re a baseball fan, specifically a Marlins fan, Jeff Conine is a name that carries a lot of weight. Known affectionately as “Mr. Marlin,” Conine wasn’t just a player; he was the heartbeat of the Florida (now Miami) Marlins franchise during its most iconic eras.
Conine’s journey with the Marlins began at the very start. He was selected from the Kansas City Royals in the 1992 expansion draft and quickly became the team’s first true star. He played in the Marlins’ inaugural game in 1993, going 4-for-4. He played all 162 games in that first season, finishing third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.
Conine was a two-time All-Star (1994, 1995) and famously won the 1995 All-Star Game MVP after hitting a go-ahead pinch-hit home run in his only at-bat.
In March 2025, the Marlins officially cemented his legacy by making him the inaugural inductee into the Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. The family tradition continues today, as his son, Griffin Conine, recently made his own Major League debut with the Marlins.
