Vince Coleman, nicknamed “Vincent Van Go,” was a dynamic and exciting baseball player known for his incredible speed and base-stealing prowess. He is best known for his years with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1985 to 1990.
In his debut season in 1985 with the Cardinals, Coleman won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. That year, he set a rookie record by stealing 110 bases. Coleman’s speed was a major factor in his success. He led the National League in stolen bases for his first six seasons (1985-1990). He also was a two-time All-Star, in 1988 and 1989.
In 1985, during the National League Championship Series, he suffered a season-ending injury when the automatic tarpaulin at Busch Stadium rolled over his leg. The Cardinals went on to lose the World Series that year.
After leaving the Cardinals as a free agent, he played for several other teams including the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, and Detroit Tigers.
