Tim Hosley was originally signed by the Tigers in 1966 out of South Carolina. His path through the big leagues is a perfect snapshot of a 1970s reserve player.
After his brief cups of coffee in Detroit, Hosley moved over to the powerhouse Oakland A’s. He spent the 1973 and 1974 seasons largely as a late-season call-up or insurance policy, technically earning rings during Oakland’s historic three-peat dynasty, though he wasn’t on the active postseason rosters.
Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the Rule 5 draft in late 1974, Hosley finally got his most extended look in the majors. Splitting catching duties in 1975 with Steve Swisher and George Mitterwald, he played in a career-high 62 games, hitting .255 with 6 home runs and posting a fantastic .382 on-base percentage thanks to 27 walks.
Hosley returned to the A’s for a second stint (1976–1978). He popped up one last time in the majors for an 18-game stint with Billy Martin‘s 1981 “Billyball” Athletics squad before wrapping up his professional playing career.
Hosley passed away in 2014 in his hometown of Spartanburg, South Carolina, remembered by vintage collectors and historians as a quintessential piece of 1970s baseball lore.
Tim Hosley sits center on this 1972 Topps “Rookie Stars” card shared with Tigers teammates Jim Foor and Paul Jata.
