David Arthur Kingman, famously nicknamed “Kong” or “Sky King,” was a powerful and often enigmatic slugger whose Major League Baseball career spanned 16 seasons (1971-1986). Kingman was known almost exclusively for his prodigious home runs.
Dave Kingman was the first overall pick by the San Francisco Giants in the 1970 amateur draft. He made his MLB debut in 1971 and immediately showcased his raw power. In 1972, his first full season, he hit 29 home runs. Kingman’s approach at the plate was legendary for its “three true outcomes” focus: home run, strikeout, or walk.
Kingman had two separate tours with the Mets and became a fan favorite due to his long home runs. In 1977, Kingman had one of the most unusual seasons in baseball history, playing for four different teams in one year: the New York Mets, San Diego Padres, California Angels, and New York Yankees.
His most productive offensive season came with the Chicago Cubs in 1979, where he led the National League with a career-high 48 home runs and 115 RBIs. He was an All-Star in 1979 and 1980 with the Cubs. Kingman finished his career with the Oakland Athletics, continuing to hit for power.
Kingman was known for his quiet and sometimes reclusive demeanor with the media, which occasionally led to strained relationships with reporters. His “Kong” nickname stemmed from his powerful physique (6’6″, 210 lbs) and the monstrous distances of his home runs.
