Charles Oliver “Charlie” Hough was a truly unique and enduring figure in Major League Baseball, primarily known for his masterful use of the knuckleball and his remarkable longevity. His career spanned an incredible 25 seasons (1970-1994) with four different franchises, and he remained effective well into his 40s.

Hough’s career was entirely defined by his knuckleball. He relied on it almost exclusively, often throwing it 80-90% of the time. Drafted by the Dodgers in 1966, he struggled as a conventional pitcher in the minors. It wasn’t until 1970, at age 22, that he fully committed to the knuckleball, a decision that transformed his career.

Hough began his career with the Dodgers, spending his first decade primarily as a valuable multi-inning reliever. He was a key bullpen arm for Dodgers teams that made several postseason appearances, including the 1977 and 1978 World Series.

After being purchased by the Rangers in 1980, he was converted into a full-time starting pitcher at the age of 34, a time when many pitchers are declining. He earned his only All-Star selection in 1986. Hough also played for the Chicago White Sox (1991-1992) and Florida Marlins (1993-1994).

After retiring, Charlie Hough has remained involved in baseball, often serving as a pitching coach or instructor, particularly for young pitchers interested in the knuckleball. He was inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.
