Selected in the 8th round of the 1984 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox out of Florida State University, Jody Reed was one of the premier line-drive machine middle infielders and doubles hitters of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Standing 5’9″, Reed made up for his compact frame with superior plate discipline, a relentless contact bat, and defensive versatility. A core contributor to two Boston AL East division-title squads (1988, 1990), Reed spent 11 seasons in the majors with the Red Sox, Dodgers, Brewers, Padres, and Tigers.
After brief call-ups in 1987, Reed broke out as Boston’s everyday shortstop and second baseman, quickly mastering the green monster and gap-to-gap hitting.
1988 Rookie of the Year Runner-Up (3rd): Taking over starting duties mid-season for manager Joe Morgan, Reed hit .293 with 23 doubles in 109 games while striking out just 21 times in 338 at-bats, finishing 3rd in AL ROY voting.
3-Year Doubles Surge (1989–1991): Reed turned Fenway Park into a doubles factory, recording 42 doubles in 1989, leading the American League with 45 doubles in 1990, and logging another 42 in 1991.
Peak 1990 Season: Paced Boston to another AL East crown by posting a .289/.371/.390 line with 173 hits, 45 doubles, and 70 runs scored, earning him an 18th-place finish in AL MVP voting.
Defensive Stability in LA (1993): Acquired by Los Angeles prior to 1993, Reed stabilized the Dodgers’ middle infield, committing only 5 errors while hitting .276 in 132 games.
