Drafted in the 1st round (9th overall pick) of the 1982 MLB June Secondary Draft out of Clark College by the New York Mets, Randall Kirk “Randy” Myers was one of the most dominant left-handed relief aces of the late 1980s and 1990s.
Famous for his intimidating presence, high-90s heat, and signature camouflage gear worn under his uniform, Myers spent 15 seasons in the Major Leagues (1985–1998) with the Mets, Reds, Padres, Cubs, Orioles, and Blue Jays. He amassed 347 career saves—currently ranking 13th on the MLB all-time saves list—and served as the primary late-inning closer for four separate postseason franchises.
Myers was a centerpiece of several of the most famous bullpen units of his era.
1990 World Series Champion & NLCS MVP: Traded to the Cincinnati Reds prior to the 1990 season, Myers paired with Rob Dibble and Norm Charlton to form the legendary “Nasty Boys” bullpen. Myers went 4–6 with 31 saves during the regular season and was named 1990 NLCS Co-MVP (sharing the honor with Dibble) after throwing 5.2 scoreless relief innings against Pittsburgh, before closing out the World Series sweep of Oakland.
4-Time All-Star & Rolaids Relief Winner: Earned NL/AL All-Star selections with four different teams (1990 Reds, 1994 Cubs, 1995 Orioles, 1997 Orioles).
1993 NL Save Leader (53 Saves): Set a then-National League record by saving 53 games for the 1993 San Diego Padres, becoming the first left-handed relief pitcher in NL history to reach the 50-save threshold.
1997 AL Save Leader (45 Saves): Led the American League in saves in 1997 while anchoring the Baltimore Orioles’ wire-to-wire AL East championship bullpen.
