Drafted in the 9th round of the 1983 MLB Draft out of the University of Minnesota by the Oakland Athletics, Terry Lee Steinbach was the steady, defensive anchor behind the plate for Oakland’s powerhouse pennant-winning teams of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Famous for his handling of Oakland’s elite pitching rotation, clutch postseason hitting, and durability, Steinbach spent 14 Major League seasons (1986–1999) with the Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins. A 3-time All-Star and World Series Champion, he logged 1,246 career hits and 162 home runs, establishing himself as one of the premier catchers of the era.
Steinbach was a cornerstone of Tony La Russa’s Oakland dynasty alongside Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, and Rickey Henderson.
1988 MLB All-Star Game MVP: Voted as the Starting Catcher for the AL All-Star squad, Steinbach stole the show in Cincinnati by driving in both American League runs—homering off Dwight Gooden and hitting a sacrifice fly—to win the 1988 All-Star Game MVP Award.
1989 World Series Champion: Served as the starting backstop for Oakland’s World Series championship sweep over the San Francisco Giants, launching a 3-run home run in Game 2.
1996 Career Power Surge: Enjoyed a massive offensive season at age 34 with the A’s, hitting .272 with a career-high 35 home runs and 100 RBIs in 133 games before returning home to finish his career with the Minnesota Twins.
