Signed by the San Diego Padres as an international free agent out of Puerto Rico in 1982, Benito Santiago Rivera re-engineered the catching position with his legendary arm strength, kinetic squat throw, and high-impact offense.
Best remembered for his iconic 1987 Rookie of the Year campaign, Santiago played 20 Major League seasons (1986–2005) across stints with the Padres, Marlins, Reds, Phillies, Blue Jays, Cubs, Giants, and Pirates. A 5-time All-Star, 3-time Gold Glove winner, and 4-time Silver Slugger, Santiago accumulated 1,830 hits and 217 home runs.
Santiago was a pioneer behind the plate, famous for throwing out base-stealers while dropping directly to his knees.
Historic 1987 Unanimous ROY Campaign: Delighted the league with a 34-game hitting streak—the longest hitting streak by a catcher in MLB history and the longest ever recorded by a rookie. He finished the year with a .300 AVG, 16 HRs, 79 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, earning the NL Rookie of the Year Award by a unanimous vote.
Master of the Knee Throw: Perfected throwing out runners to second and third base directly from his knees, utilizing pure upper-body arm speed to shut down late-1980s speedsters.
2002 NLCS MVP: Served as the veteran backstop for the 2002 San Francisco Giants NL Pennant team, winning NLCS MVP honors after hitting 2 home runs and driving in 6 runs against the St. Louis Cardinals.
