Selected in the 1st round (9th overall pick) of the 1982 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves out of Farmington High School, Roy Duane Ward was one of the most dominant and overpowering late-inning relievers of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Traded to Toronto in 1986 for Doyle Alexander, Ward teamed up with Tom Henke to give the Blue Jays the most formidable late-inning bullpen tandem in baseball. Equipped with a heavy mid-90s fastball and a sharp slider, Ward spent 9 seasons in Toronto (1986–1995), winning back-to-back World Series titles (1992, 1993).
After spending five seasons (1988–1992) as baseball’s premier multi-inning setup man—throwing over 100 relief innings each year—Ward stepped into the full-time closer role in 1993.
1993 AL Save Leader: Tied for the AL lead with a franchise-record 45 saves, posting a 2.15 ERA and 97 strikeouts across 71.2 innings. He finished 5th in AL Cy Young Award voting and earned his first AL All-Star selection.
1993 Postseason Anchor: Recorded two saves and was the winning pitcher in the decisive Game 6 of the 1993 World Series prior to Joe Carter’s walk-off home run.
Postseason Efficiency: Across 8 World Series appearances (1992 and 1993), Ward went 3–0 with 2 saves and a 1.13 ERA.
