Drafted 3rd overall in the 1st round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners out of Saugus High School (CA), Roger William Salkeld was one of the highest-touted high school pitching prospects of the late 1980s.
Standing 6’5″ with an electric mid-90s fastball and a heavy curveball, Salkeld came from strong baseball bloodlines (his grandfather, Bill Salkeld, caught in the majors for six seasons). Selected immediately after Ben McDonald and Tyler Houston, Salkeld was primed to anchor Seattle’s rotation alongside Randy Johnson, but severe shoulder injuries derailment kept his Big League potential from fully materializing. Across parts of three MLB seasons (1993, 1994, 1996) with the Mariners and Cincinnati Reds, he posted a 10–10 record with a 5.61 ERA.
Salkeld dominated the California high school circuit, setting historic marks that made him a consensus top-3 pick.
High School Dominance: Never surrendered a triple or home run during his entire Saugus High School career, recording two 17-strikeout 7-inning games and a 19-strikeout 9-inning game in 1989.
MLB Debut (September 8, 1993): Debuted at age 22 against Baltimore, throwing 4.2 innings and striking out four. He posted a stellar 2.57 ERA across three outings late in the 1993 season.
First Major League Win (April 28, 1994): Pitched his finest big-league game for Seattle, tossing 6.2 shutout, 2-hit innings to defeat the Minnesota Twins.
1996 Reds Rotation Stint: Traded to Cincinnati following the 1995 season, Salkeld made 19 starts for the Reds in 1996, posting an 8–5 record with 82 strikeouts over 116.0 innings pitched.
