Selected 14th overall in the 1st round of the 1993 MLB Draft out of El Camino High School (Sacramento, CA) by the San Diego Padres, Derrek Leon Lee was one of the most complete, graceful, and physically gifted first basemen of his generation.
Standing 6’5″ with an elite combination of power, smooth glovework, and surprising speed, Lee played 15 Major League seasons (1997–2011) across stints with the Padres, Marlins, Cubs, Braves, Orioles, and Pirates. Over 1,959 career games, he launched 331 home runs, drove in 1,078 runs, won three Gold Glove Awards, and earned a World Series ring.
Lee evolved from a blue-chip prospect into a centerpiece middle-of-the-order force and elite defender on two iconic 2000s franchises.
2003 World Series Champion: Served as the everyday first baseman and defensive anchor for the underdog Florida Marlins, hitting 31 home runs with 92 RBIs in the regular season. He provided iconic postseason moments, including a clutch 2-run double in Game 6 of the NLCS to cap Florida’s miraculous comeback against Chicago.
3x Gold Glove Award Winner (2003, 2005, 2007): Widely regarded as one of the finest defensive first basemen of the decade, using his extraordinary range and height to scoop throw after throw.
2x All-Star & Silver Slugger: Selected to the NL All-Star team in 2005 and 2007, earning a Silver Slugger Award during his 2005 peak.
