Alex Rodriguez, often known as A-Rod, is a former American professional baseball infielder who played for 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB).
Rodriguez was drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in the 1993 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut at just 18 years old and quickly became a superstar shortstop, winning the American League batting title in 1996.
In 2001, he signed a then-record-breaking 10-year, $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers, where he continued his prodigious home run production and won his first MVP award in 2003. He was later traded to the New York Yankees in 2004, where he transitioned to third base. With the Yankees, he won two more MVP awards (2005, 2007) and was a key member of the team that won the 2009 World Series. He was a 14-time All-Star, won three AL MVP Awards, two Gold Glove Awards, and ten Silver Slugger Awards. In 1998, he became just the third player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a single season.
In 2009, Rodriguez admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) from 2001 to 2003 while with the Rangers. This admission was followed by a more significant scandal in 2013, when he was implicated in the Biogenesis scandal. He is one of the most celebrated and also controversial figures in the history of the sport due to his remarkable talent and a high-profile doping scandal.

Did You Know? From a pure numbers standpoint, A-Rod’s lifetime resume matches up with any diamond immortal in baseball history. He is a premier member of the ultra-exclusive 3,000-hit and 600-home run clubs, concluding his spectacular 22-year major league journey with 3,115 career hits, 696 home runs (ranking fifth all-time), and 2,086 RBIs.
Advanced analytics heavily validate his historic impact; he accumulated an extraordinary 117.6 career Wins Above Replacement (WAR), placing him among the top 20 position players to ever play the game. While his admissions of using performance-enhancing drugs and a season-long suspension in 2014 have heavily divided Hall of Fame voters and complicated his path to Cooperstown, his on-field production remains a towering monument of modern baseball history.
